So what does it take to achieve this new standard in comfort and quality? And how is it achieved for only a marginal increase over inferior conventional methods?
LYVE Building Technique
Achieving exceptional durability, comfort, and performance requires a holistic design approach. At the heart of the strategy is a proven wall system based on building science fundamentals. Cost-effectiveness is achieved by relying on conventional tools and materials. When put all together, a 2200 sq ft home for example, can be heated with a hair dryer. The result is an impeccably comfortable home.
ARYZE LYVE Components:
1. Continuous Outsulation: this is like wrapping your house in a really thick sweater. Insulation surrounds the entire building envelope to reduce heat loss in the winter, reduce heat gain in the summer, reduce noise infiltration, and make a more comfortable interior by mitigating thermal gradients in the room. Even the foundation, typically responsible for 30-50% of heat loss, is insulated from the ground. Most significantly, by placing insulation outside the building, the chance of developing mould and mildew in the wall is eliminated. And because the insulation is continuous, you get the nominal R-value of your insulation instead of the effective R-value. (For conventional construction methods, nominal R-22 becomes effective R-16.1 or less).
2. Advanced framing: by installing insulation where it belongs – on the outside of the structure – advanced framing techniques are possible and less lumber is required. Code-minimum buildings require 2x6 studs only because of insulation requirements. With insulation outside, the structure can be executed with advanced framing techniques: 2x4 studs at 24” o.c. spacing, single top plates, two-stud corners, no jack studs, and no cripples. Advanced framing is faster, cheaper, more energy efficient and uses at least 30% less lumber.
3. One Superior Barrier: air tightness is key to high-performing buildings. This idea has been part of conventional building for some time but implemented in a way such that it does a disservice to the health of the building. After a plastic vapour barrier is stapled to the inside of a stud wall, it gets littered with holes, resulting in drafts, moisture transfer, and eventually mould. Since the ARYZE LYVE places insulation outside the building, the air and vapour barrier can also be combined and applied to the outside of the building and at a more appropriate dewpoint. Thus everything inside the building is warm and dry; there is less expansion/contraction, less shifting, and less cracking. There are no drafts, less heat loss, reduced humidity in the summer, no risk of mould or rot, and improved durability.
4. No thermal bridges: A thermal bridge is part of a structure which transmits heat through the building envelope; basically, anything that isn’t insulation is a thermal bridge. In conventional stud-frame construction, approximately 25% of the framing is structurally unnecessary and each stud being a thermal bridge, about 1/3 of the wall system is uninsulated and a thermal bridge. The ARYZE LYVE design eliminates thermal bridges. This dramatically reduces heat loss and raises the interior wall temperature, making a room more comfortable.
5. High-performance windows: triple-glazed high-performance windows are optimized for size and location so that they add more energy to the home than they lose. Triple-glazing improves the interior surface temperature of the windows which enhances comfort by reducing thermal gradients and cold convection currents in the room.
6. Ventilation with heat recovery: a well-sealed building envelope requires optimized air transfer. Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRVs) provide clean, filtered fresh air year round and eliminate stale, odorous, and humid air from inside. While providing fresh air, HRVs also recover at least 75% of the heat from air being eliminated. In conventional ventilation schemes, this heat is either dumped into the atmosphere or stale air is recirculated within the house.

For new construction, ARYZE LYVE is a cost-effective strategy for high-performing building. ARYZE LYVE design principles are suitable to any architectural style and client requirements.
